Overseas students tell all
The experiences of international students in UK further education colleges have been capturedin a new report.
The New Horizons report, published in November, focuses on a number of issues ranging from accommodation and leisure to finance and immigration. The document is based on a survey carried out by UKCOSA ― UK Council for International Education ― in association with organisations like the British Council.
High level of satisfaction
The survey shows that there is a high level of satisfaction among overseas students in the UK ― 88 per cent are satisfied or very satisfied with their course and 80 per cent are satisfied or very satisfied with the supportthey receive from their college.
Accommodation and immigration
Accommodation, which is always an issue for most international students, shows that students who stay with hostfamilies are the most satisfied. Eighty-one per cent in homestay accommodation said that their host family are both friendly and welcoming.
Visa and immigration issues also had interesting results. Two-thirds of students who needed a visa prior to coming to the UK, found applying for one relatively easy and straightforward, although 18 per cent found it to be a lengthy and difficult process.
Financial matters and part-time work
Even though many students from the survey were self-funding (almost 70 per cent having their fees paid by their family), there was a high number that reported financialdifficulty at some point during their stay (a third of the survey sample).
Many students underestimated the cost of living and studying in the UK, although some issues seemed to revolved around money-management. As a result, many students from the survey(more than half) had to look for work.
Social life
Even though most students decide to come to the UK to study English, having a good social life also factoredinto their decision. Over 50 per cent of respondents indicated that social activities are availableand that they had used them but 20 per cent were not entirely happy with what they were offered.
Suggestions for improvement
The report provides a basis for addressing some of the concerns many international students face in UK further education colleges. The report's recomendationsinclude UKVisas to address the problems faced by one-third of students getting a visa and that the government should make it easier for overseas students to find part-time work.
Other suggestions outlined in the report centred on colleges improving information about tuition feesand living costs, improving social activities and offering practical help and advice to students seeking part-time work.
More than 600 college students
More than 600 students from different colleges across the UK were involved in the study and included people from different age groups (some under 18 and some over 40). More than 80 different nationalities were representedin the survey.
