TEEP - History/Background

The TEEP tests originated from an extensive study carried out into the Language Problems of Overseas Students in Tertiary Education in the UK (Weir 1983) in response to growing need to judge suitability of placing non-native English speaking students on UK university degree courses. The study therefore assessed needs of these students and created a method of measuring ability in academic English – in contrast to general English.

This version of TEEP was adopted by the AEB (Associated Examining Board, now AQA) during the 1980s, and references from journals and books around this time refer to the original test format. One significant difference between the original and current TEEP which should be noted is the scoring system – formerly a 0-4 scale, and currently a 0-9 scale.

The original study was ground-breaking for its time. The modern reality of large numbers of international students coming to the UK annually has made many more people aware of the importance of teaching and assessing EAP, and systems are now well established. The TEEP has been adapted over the years in response to research and experiences of the changing nature of overseas students in the UK.

Porter (1990) brought TEEP to the University of Reading and it was used during the 1990s mainly for internal use.

During 1999-2001 O’Sullivan and Slaght redeveloped the test into its modern format, as explained in the 2001 Extended Handbook. Further modifications have taken place since then, reported in subsequent reports.

Use of the TEEP since 2001 has been primarily for the specific purpose of being a major – though not exclusive – measure of performance of students attending pre-sessional courses at CALS, University of Reading. From 2007, other universities in the UK also began to use TEEP as part of their pre-sessional assessment. It has also been used on a smaller scale as a stand-alone UK university entry test, although this use is now expanding both in the UK and overseas.
